Mayschoß circular hike September 24, 2023

A visit to our friends on the Ahr

What has happened?

The excursion began punctually at 10:30 a.m. at starting point 1 in Kerkrade and starting point 2 in Limbourg. All the keen hikers were at the start, but first they were able to see for themselves on a drive through the summery Eifel that the Eifel is rightly called a nature park. The hiking group approached the starting point in Mayschoß through hills and valleys. There, a delicious lunch menu with a wide selection of regional specialties awaited us on a sun-protected terrace, served by the very friendly staff of Weinhaus Michaelishof. Well rested and refreshed, we were then ready to set off, first along the high trail through the vineyards along the Ahr. On the other side, the Saffenburg castle provided the hikers crossing the vineyards with a glorious view as they climbed the first hills in high spirits and with the opportunity to enjoy a few wine drinks. The vineyards left us in awe of the plump vines, which were lurking in blue and red abundance on the vines. At the high point of the trail, we enjoyed the view of the Ahr, but above all of the Saffenburg castle opposite with its historic past. Hiking guide Kathrin expertly explained the history, soil composition and geological features to the interested hikers. We then headed back towards Michaelishof, where we once again enjoyed a cup of coffee and a slice of the wonderful homemade cake on the sun-protected terrace. The second part of the hike now led around Mayschoß and the local mountain in the middle of Mayschoß. The Red Wine Trail, parts of the routes from the accompanying book published by the Stichting Herzog Limburg Pfad (HLP), remains a natural and cultural experience of the highest order! After completing the hike, we were finally able to stop off at the wine cellar of the winegrowers' cooperative.

Announcing the hike

For the first time since the terrible flood disaster, the Hertoglimburgpad Foundation (HLP) would like to start a hike from the Mayschoß winegrowers' cooperative. During the pre-hike, we were able to see for ourselves that our winegrower friends are fully occupied with looking positively into the future. We would like to support this radiance of optimism with our friendship hike on parts of the red wine hiking trail and other beautiful routes around Mayschoß.

The planned 7-8 kilometer circular hike around Mayschoß offers a wonderful view of the Ahr valley and the Saffenburg. It takes us through the vineyards, which are sure to be red and golden by then, and which hopefully hold out the prospect of a luscious Oktoberfest in October. However, the good wine from the winegrowers' cooperative will be available to us before then. At the end of our hike, we will be welcomed by the Leyendecker family, who will open the doors of the wine cellar for us to enjoy various types of good Ahr wine.

At around 7:30 p.m., we will set off for home, filled with wonderful impressions of nature, the tasty ingredients of the snack platter and golden grape juice.
