Memorial Mass in honor of the founder of Rolduc Abbey Ailbert d'Antoing

A hope of beatification is alive!

The abbey of Rolduc, founded by Ailbert and his brothers in 1104, was first a wooden chapel. Ailbert's piety attracted the favor of the Count and the other lords of the place who multiplied donations. It also attracted locals.

In 1106, a noble and wealthy lord donated Ailbert a number of properties that made it possible to build the crypt under the abbey church (the church itself was not built until much later) and lay the foundation for a monastery. The crypt was consecrated on Dec. 13, 1108, by the bishop of Liège, Otbert, in the presence of the archbishop of Trier, Bruno de Bretten, and local lords. The bishop and the counts of Saffenberg granted the abbey several privileges: possession of property, the right to justice over their possessions, the right to preach the word of God, the right to choose their superior, the right to administer certain sacraments.
